Member Karen Harris

Biography

Karen R. Harris is a renowned Regents Professor Emeritus and Research Professor at Arizona State University. She has been an educator for 50 years, first teaching 4th grade in a coal mining community in West Virginia and then teaching adolescents in special education. She earned her doctoral degree at Auburn University in 1981. Her research spans special education, educational psychology, and literacy. She developed the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model of strategies instruction, researched in the areas of writing, mathematics, and more. SRSD has been deemed an evidenced based instructional method in the U.S. and SRSD instruction is now being researched or implemented in numerous countries. Her current research focuses on integrating skills instruction with SRSD for writing, and effective professional development for SRSD instruction in inclusive classrooms. Former editor of the Journal of Educational Psychology, Dr. Harris was senior editor of the American Psychological Association Educational Psychology Handbook, (2012). She is co-author or co-editor of 15 books, including Powerful Writing Strategies for All Students. Author of over 250 peer-reviewed publications, she has contributed to white papers for groups such as IRA/NICHD, Carnegie, and CEC. She has served widely, for example as the former President of both APA Division 15 (Educational Psychology) and the Council for Exceptional Children, Division for Research. She has received over 20 awards for research, including career awards, from the International Council for Exceptional Children, American Educational Research Association, and the American Psychological Association.
